Working within the segment

Segment Layout

While you are working within a segment, there are several helpful tips and actions you can take to make the translation process easier. Below is a clear image of what it looks like to be in the middle of translating a segment.

Here is a view of the same image that is annotated with all the information and actions you can take right from the segment itself.

  1. The segment number you are currently working on.

  2. The Source segment.

  3. The icon here indicates the state of the translation. This particular icon indicates that the segment still requires a saved translation.

  4. Where you add or edit the target translation.

  5. The icon here is a quick way to copy the text from the source segment into the target segment. See here for the shortcut.

  6. Click this icon to split the segment. See here for more information.

  7. It is extremely important to always be mindful of tags that you have not yet applied. Be sure to check this section to see how many tags you still need to apply to your translation.

  8. Using this icon you can quickly undo your most recent edit. See here for the shortcut.

  9. Knowing the character count can help you make sure that your translation has not gotten too long. If the source file specifies character limits, you will see those here, as well as a warning if you exceed the character limit. Read more here.

  10. Use this icon to quickly add formatting to your translation like a hard return or white space character. See here for more information.

  11. This keyboard icon will give you a few quick options to add characters with accents and tildes. Currently supported when translating to German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese regardless of the target locale.

  12. Here you can prevent your segment from being saved to TM. For information on when you would use this and how to use it, see here.

  13. Save your translation here. Also, from here you can set how to navigate through the next most important segments using the dropdown. See here for more information. If you save the last segment on the page, it will automatically load the next page for you to work on.
