In-Context Translation for Subtitles

Overview

In the Enterprise Workbench, Linguists can view the source video for context while translating subtitles. Like all of our other in-context offerings, translated subtitles will replace the source text so reviewers can ensure that translations match the tone and pace of the video. The source videos can be linked to the document as you upload the subtitle file, or after upload. Upload the video file to the Enterprise TMS or provide a link to where the videos are hosted. 

Supported File Types

  • SRT

  • WebVTT – When importing WebVTT files to the TMS, make sure you select SubRip (.srt) under Import As. 

  • XLIFF2 – Your XLIFF2 file must include start and end timestamps in the metadata section of the segment. You must use the m41 importer version (or above) when uploading.

Subtitle Document Upload

  1. Add your subtitle file to the desired project using the Add Documents page. You need to use the m39 Importer Version or higher to translate subtitle files in context. 

  2. Expand the Secondary Meta section. 

  3. Provide a Video URL or Upload a Video. (If you are a developer looking to upload videos to the Enterprise TMS see our API documentation for uploading videos to the TMS.)

    1. If you want to link your content to a video that you are hosting yourself:

      1. Ensure the video can be accessed by anyone with the link or provide linguists with the necessary credentials to access the video. 

      2. The link needs to be an actual path to a video or m3u8 video manifest file, not a URL to YouTube, Vimeo, or other media platforms. 

    2. If you want Enterprise to host your video by simply uploading the file you should be aware of the following:

      1. We support any video file type that is supported by HTML 5. 

      2. The video will be removed from Enterprise 45 days after it is uploaded to the TMS. You can re-upload the video if needed. 

      3. You cannot upload a file larger than 2GB. Since this video is only meant to provide context, it is best to upload smaller videos with lower quality so linguists throughout the world can easily load and view the videos while translating. Large and high-quality videos could cause buffering issues. 

  4.  If you choose to upload the Video to Enterprise, you will be provided with a pop-up menu where you can drag and drop your video file or browse for the file on your device. Do not close the pop-up menu before your video file has finished uploading.

     

  5. Once the file has finished uploading (or you have entered the Video URL), and you have added all the other necessary metadata, (due dates, reference materials, etc.) select Upload to add the subtitle document to the TMS.

In-Context Subtitle in the Workbench

  1. Subtitle files that are associated with video files or URLs will automatically launch the Context Viewer and display the video.

  2. The following media controls are available in the Context Viewer:

    1. Play/Pause

      1. The default hotkey to play and pause the video is alt+shift+p. You can configure this however you would like. 

    2. Adjust/Mute volume

    3. Fullscreen

    4. Download

    5. Adjusting Captions

    6. Picture in Picture

  3. Linking the source content to segments:

    1. If linguists play the video without a segment selected, the entire video will play without pausing.

    2. They can select the target icon in the context viewer to be taken to the segment with the corresponding timestamp. 

    3. As the user navigates through the segments, the video will automatically jump to the time that corresponds with that segment. 

    4. The video will pause automatically at the end of the selected segment's timestamp. 

    5. As the user enters a translation, it will automatically change the context viewer to the target view and display the translated text. 

  4. The segment displays the start and end time for the subtitle as specified by the subtitle file as long as you used the m39 importer version when uploading the source file.

  5. If the timestamps in the subtitle file are missing or are entered incorrectly: 

    1. The segment will not link correctly to the video in the Context Viewer. 

    2. An error will be displayed on the segment.
